Project's Mission
Shortcut is a European Film Project centred on Citizenship Education through film, to be delivered in the classroom. The four partner countries involved have a combined wealth of experience in working with young people and film education. Our aim is to increase young viewers’ knowledge of issues through European film works from different, sometimes distant countries and strengthen teachers’ skills in educating through and about film.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
‘Shortcut – Small Stories, Big Issues’ is a film education project focused on European short films. The project was developed by four European organisations from Poland, Northern Ireland, Czech Republic and Portugal with the support of the European Union Creative Europe Media Programme.
The films have been selected thematically to strengthen the competences today’s youth are faced with in their modern world. The library of curated European short films and animations explore citizenship and personal development themes. The support material for teachers will be a film educational toolkit on an accessible VOD platform available for registered Educational Institutions.
The database of films, materials and education activities are available on the national websites for each of the partner countries through ‘Shortcut – Small Stories, Big Issues’.

Center for Citizenship Education (Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej, CEO)
is the largest Polish non-governmental organisation operating in the sector of education. For 25 years we have been changing the Polish school and committed to wiser and more engaging education for students, more effective and satisfying work for teachers and school principals. We introduce modern teaching methods and formative assessment to schools. We run programmes that help young people to understand the world, develop critical thinking, faith in their own abilities, teach entrepreneurship and responsibility, encourage them to engage in the public life and work for the benefit of others.

One World in Schools (OWIS)
is one of the educational programmes of the organization People in Need. Since 2001 OWIS endeavours to help responsible young people approach information in an open and critical manner.
OWIS provides teachers with audio-visual lessons, ie. documentary films and methodological materials available online at JSNS.CZ, bringing important topics and specific stories into schools. The OWIS learning materials respond to the situation in society as well as current challenges, individual lessons cover topics such as human rights, development issues, the environment, media literacy, modern history or civic engagement. Emphasis is placed on the practical applicability of the materials, everything is hence produced in cooperation with teachers. Teachers and pupils in more than 3,600 Czech primary and secondary schools work with OWIS materials.

The Nerve Center
is one of the UK’s most dynamic and innovative creative media centres. Based in Northern Ireland’s two major cities Belfast and Derry-Londonderry, the Nerve Centre provides a regional hub for the creative industries, integrating film and animation production, education, training and exhibition. Northern Ireland Screen is our major funder supporting the strategic role that our organisation plays in creating a talent pipeline for young people into the screen industries.
This role involves among others:
- operating two Creative Learning Centres in Belfast and Derry~Londonderry, supporting teachers and pupils in the creative use of digital technology in the classroom.
- supporting CCEA’s Moving Image Arts A-Level and GCSE that the Nerve Centre played a critical role in developing. These vocational qualifications are now available in more than 100 schools in Northern Ireland and extending as far as Singapore.
